Art Overview

Term 1 and 2: Personal Investigation- developing ideas

Students will experiment with a wide range of materials, media and processed which they will be encouraged to evaluate to select the most effective. They will also explore diverse themes under the title of 'Discarded' where they will be encouraged to develop their own individual concept and approaches.

  1. Students will receive regular feedback through verbal discussion, peer assessment and target setting within lessons.

    Written feedback will also be provided by peers and teaching staff where appropriate to support progress and reporting.

    Work will be assessed against the 4 AQA assessment objectives resulting in a grade from A*-E

brushwork

Refers to the way paint is applied in a painting, describing texture of the paint surface applied with a brush

assemblage

Art that is made by assembling disparate elements which are often scavenged by the artist, or sometimes bought specially.

component

The term ‘Unit of Work’ has been replaced by the term ‘Component’. Component 1: Portfolio; Component 2: Externally set assignment.

composition

The arrangement of elements within a work of art.

context

The setting for an event, statement, or idea

impasto

The process or technique of laying on paint or pigment thickly so that it stands out from a surface.

medium

Can refer to both to the type of art (painting, sculpture, printmaking) as well as the materials an artwork is made from.

mixed media

A term used to describe artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials.

montage

An assembly of images that relate to each other in some way to create a single work or part of a work of art.

photomontage

Another name for a composite image, which is made by combining pictures from different sources into a single image.

sources

Sources can include such references as the work of artists, craftspeople, designers and/or makers, the built environment, the natural world, objects and/or artefacts

annotation

Using appropriate specialist vocabulary, written annotation should supplement visual material and could support the student’s evidencing of ideas development, observations, reflections, evaluations and personal intentions.

Develop the individual:

Through the individual approach to the areas and ideas explored, students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of topics linking to society, culture, consumerism, the environment, what makes us human and what makes them who they are. Students are encouraged to explore ideas and concepts of interest to them. They will discuss and share ideas; thus gaining a greater understanding of themselves as well as the people and the world around them. Being able to express themselves & their ideas through their art, gives them the opportunity to have a personal opinion and express this.

Create a supportive community:

Students learn to discuss, share and express their ideas and opinions in considered and respectful ways. Student gain a deeper understanding of the world and people around them.

Term 3: Personal Investigation- Creating outcomes

Students will experiment with a wide range of materials, media and processed which they will be encouraged to evaluate to select the most effective. They will also explore diverse themes under the title of 'Discarded' where they will be encouraged to develop their own individual concept and approaches.

During this term, students will work independently to create an outcome showcasing the best materials, techniques, imagery and concepts explored so far in the course.

Term 6: Mock Exam- Creating an Outcome

Through the choice of themes, students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of areas and make a personal decision about which are of study they would like to make artwork about. Students are encouraged to explore ideas and concepts of interest to them.

They will discuss and share ideas; thus gaining a greater understanding of themselves as well as the people and the world around them.

During this term, they will design and create an outcome. This will be created in exam conditions for a duration of 15 hours.

Formerly known as ‘Externally Set Task’. Students must select one starting point from the externally set assignment paper associated with their chosen title, evidencing coverage of all four assessment objectives.

expressive

Effectively conveying thoughts or feelings. Where the process and style of creation is emphasised rather than the final product. Expression in art might be seen in bold colour, or gestural mark making.
